Late bus and after-school transportation · North Jersey
Late buses, mid-day runs and after-school shuttles
A dedicated late bus on your bell schedule, a mid-day run for half days and early dismissals, or a shuttle between campuses and programs. NW Transport runs after-school transportation for districts, charter schools and after-school programs across North Jersey with a named driver and bus on every run. Request online and a written quote comes back within one business day.
Daily, weekly or for the season. Based in Little Falls, NJ.
Runs that fit the school day, not the other way round
After-school transportation lives between the PM run and dinner. We plan it around your bell schedule and your activity calendar.
Dedicated late bus
A bus that leaves after clubs, tutoring, detention and practice let out, on the days you set. Daily, three days a week, or the season: the quote covers each run.
Mid-day and early-dismissal runs
Half days, delayed openings, kindergarten mid-day runs and early-dismissal days that the regular contract does not cover. We slot them in around the existing route.
Campus-to-campus shuttles
Students moving between a main campus and an annex, a shared gym, a career academy or a partner program, on a fixed loop that repeats every day.
After-school program buses
Transportation from school to a community program, a YMCA, a library or a sports facility, with rider lists checked at the door and a return run if the program needs it.
A named driver and bus
The same driver learns the students, the stops and the building staff. Substitutes are briefed from the same route sheet when the regular driver is out.
Aides when the district requires one
Bus aides ride when the district or the program calls for one, including on wheelchair-accessible runs. Tell us the requirement on the request and we staff it.
The right bus for the run
Late-bus ridership is smaller than the AM run and changes by season. We size the bus to the rider list, not the building.
| Vehicle | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 54-passenger school bus | A district-wide late bus serving several neighborhoods | Best when the activity bus replaces several smaller runs |
| 16- to 29-passenger bus | Most late buses, program shuttles and campus loops | Fits residential streets and small school lots |
| Wheelchair-accessible bus | Runs with riders who use a wheelchair | Lift-equipped, trained driver, aide when required |
| Van | A handful of students to one program site | Up to 5 passengers |
How a late bus is set up
Send the route sheet
Bell times, the days the bus runs, the stops or neighborhoods, the rider count and any aide or accessibility needs. Online, or by email with your existing sheet attached.
We engineer the run
Dispatch builds the stop sequence, checks the timing against your bell schedule and sizes the bus. The written quote shows every stop and time within one business day.
Driver, bus, day one
A named driver and an inspected bus are assigned. The driver's sheet and the paperwork go to the school before the first run, and dispatch confirms the start date with you.
Schedule changes, snow days and early dismissals are handled by a person on the phone, not a ticket queue.
Who books late buses with us
Most after-school transportation in North Jersey is booked by three kinds of offices, and each one needs something slightly different.
- District business offices add a late bus when activity ridership outgrows the PM run, when a sending district needs a second dismissal covered, or when a route nobody bid on needs a contractor by Monday.
- Charter school networks run extended days and multiple campuses. A dedicated late bus and a campus-to-campus shuttle on a fixed loop are the two runs we set up most often for charter operations teams.
- After-school and enrichment programs need students moved from several schools to one site in a tight window, with a rider list checked at pickup and a program staff member met at drop-off.
Every run is quoted per day or per season, in writing, with the stops and times attached. Schools and districts can book on a purchase order; other organizations pay before the start date.
Late bus questions
Can the late bus run only on certain days?
Yes. Set the days when you book: every school day, Tuesdays and Thursdays, or the days a season runs. The quote shows a per-run price and the days it covers, and the days can be adjusted by a call to dispatch.
What happens on an early dismissal or a snow day?
Call or email dispatch as soon as the district announces the change. Runs are moved, shortened or cancelled for that day with no charge when we hear before the bus leaves the yard. Weather days are handled case by case with the school.
How long does it take to start a new late bus?
With the route sheet in hand, most late buses start within a week: one business day for the written quote, then driver assignment and the paperwork for the school. Emergency coverage can start sooner by phone when a bus is free.
Do you provide bus aides?
Yes, when the district or program requires one. Aides are trained in student management and ride on wheelchair-accessible runs and on any run the school asks for. Note the requirement on the request so it is staffed from day one.
Can a charter school with several campuses book one shuttle?
Yes. Campus-to-campus shuttles run as a fixed loop with set times at each stop, and a late bus can be added on the same booking. Send the campus addresses, the bell times at each one and the rider counts.
What are the cancellation terms?
For one-off runs, cancel free of charge until 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours, half the trip price applies, and once the bus has arrived, the full price. Daily and season bookings set their notice period on the quote.
Need a late bus by next week?
Send the bell times and the stops. A written quote comes back within one business day, with a named driver and bus behind it.
